Who We Are
An Apple a Day is an educational strategy that provides a supportive environment for children and their families to learn how to take care of their minds, bodies, and environment.
An Apple a Day was founded in 2009, on the belief that all children have potential and that through supportive wellness programs they can excel academically and develop better life skills by learning how to take care of their minds, bodies and environment.
An Apple a Day Focuses on the Well Being of Children, not Well Becoming
Children are faced with a multitude of daily challenges from: daily learning, stress of (numerous) testing, peer pressure, bullying and stress at home. Wellness programs have been effective in increasing positive behavior and productivity as can be seen by the success of stress management and yoga programs in schools.
We teach children how to become responsible decision makers in their personal and academic life through self management and self awareness skills. We help children to internalize wellness concepts by creating student-centered wellness programs in which children can in turn externalize these concepts into better grades, ability to deal with peer pressure, and develop a positive foundation towards learning. Our goal is to increase the number of children living up to their potential by promoting social and emotional wellness.
Our Approach
We work with you in a collaborative manner to ensure that we clearly understand your needs. Our goal is to support children by ensuring a coordinated learning experience and strong partnership with the school.
In order to maintain the well being of the children we serve, our programs will provide the linkage between children’s wellness and academic achievement.
Our programs are designed to encourage and support parental involvement and to promote a stronger partnership between school, home and the community.
Detailed Services
The “Readers to Leaders” program targets young males between the ages of 9 and 14 who are not proficient in reading as shown by the 2008 NYS ELA exam. The “Readers to Leaders” program is a unique combination of service learning projects with language arts. Research has shown that disadvantaged youth who volunteer are significantly more likely to believe they can have a positive impact on their community as well as to think they are likely to graduate from a four-year college. The club’s members will experience all three types of service learning: direct service, indirect service and advocacy.
The “Green Walking Club” targets the 1 in 4 New Yorkers under the age of eighteen, approximately 1.1 million young people, who are obese. The Walking Club will work with students, ages 6-15, who are at least 20% overweight and come from low-income families who have limited access to healthy food options and resources. Our program helps children overcome financial barriers to physical activity by incorporating walking as part of their physical wellness as well as provide social and emotional support in dealing with the psychosocial factors of obesity.
What We Provide
A strategy unique in design because we take a holistic approach to teaching personal development and wellness.
Our groups are small, inclusive and empowering so that every child feels that they are heard, respected and understood.
